Why do my results say I'm missing skills when they're already on my resume?

Edited

1. The Skill Is Worded Differently

Jobscan looks for exact or very close keyword matches based on the job description. If your resume uses a variation of the skill that differs significantly from the way it's listed in the job posting, it may not be detected.

Example:

  • Job description says: "project management"

  • Your resume says: "managed various projects"

Even though the meaning is similar, the phrase “project management” doesn’t appear exactly, so Jobscan may flag it as missing. Try mirroring the wording from the job description more closely where appropriate and natural.

2. Resume Formatting

Sometimes, resume formatting (tables, graphics, multiple columns) can prevent the scanner from correctly parsing your text, especially if you're using a PDF.

  • Avoid tables or text boxes

  • Use standard fonts and single-column formatting

3. Skill Appears Only in a Different Form (e.g., Acronyms or Abbreviations)

If the job description says “Search Engine Optimization” and your resume says “SEO,” the scanner may not make the connection (and vice versa).Use both versions where possible: “Optimized content for SEO (Search Engine Optimization)”
